30 years. It has been 30 years since I was left alone on this deserted, dreary island. I cannot remember how I even got here. All I remember is being on a ship and there was a terrible storm. The ship was probably wrecked, its crew died along with the ship as it sank into the sea. I was the only survivor. That is all I can remember. Hmph, amnesia is not a man's best friend. I hummed to myself as I walked on the old stone sidewalk along the shoreline. It was so always quiet on this forsaken island. The waves hitting the shores ever so ominously, giving that same bleak nature. At first, I was quite depressed for not seeing the sun, but over time I grew accustomed, but I believe that only furthered my inescapable sorrow. I don't remember seeing many clear, sunny days. It took me a long time to figure it out. The island was lonely and sad. It had a near-eternal fog of sorrow and isolation. So powerful it makes any inhabitant dreary and sad. So powerful, it would never let go of its pervading fog to "lift its spirits". I didn't want to believe it at first. I was just objectively doubtful. I didn't want to be sad, but it only grew with the bitter isolation as time went on. So i just accepted my miserable existence in silence.

Now, I walk every night on the shore, thinking about my life before. Nothing never recalls, not even in my dreams. However, tonight seemed... different. The night sky was devoid of any clouds, revealing the rare sight of a clear, starry sky. And I saw the moon. It was full and luminous, glowing with its enigmatic allure. It looked so beautiful with numerous stars accompanying it. They were like candles, and the moon was a enormous lantern. Then, I saw a comet passed by. I felt... happy. I was so happy. It was something I never felt in ages.

Finally, I saw something out in the distance into the sea. I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought it was an illusion, but it was real! A ship. A moving ship! I cracked a long-forgotten smile and a tear escaped my eyes as I watch the approaching ship.
I'm proud to say that this is my first entry at a contest! Now bear with me, please. It might not be the greatest. It's nice to get out of your comfort zone every once in a while to try different types of lit.

I picked Category 1 as a short story for the Inspiration Contest on dA-WritersRevolution -  The Islander by shadeley

I was thinking to give this story a mix up. In the picture selected, the mood gave off the dreariness and mystery of the ship and old man. In my piece, I twist things around to make it sad and isolated, but to also make it positive and relieving at the end.

I do love the happy twist you gave! You're right, the picture does seem dreary and hopeless, but the way you change it is excellent! Well done, and thank you for participating!
